The defence, slide by slide

On Friday 2 October 2026 I defend my PhD thesis, The rich landscape of iterated simplicity: cellular automata and network automata, in a public talk of about 35 minutes at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering of Ghent University. These are its slides. Each one is live: step through its builds with the arrows under it, start and reset every simulation with its own button, or present the whole talk fullscreen. Under each slide, a few sentences say what the slide is about, so the talk can be followed without me. The thesis itself, chapter by chapter, is on its own page.

The title of the thesis, over a landscape in the style of its cover. It is the result of a five-year joint PhD at BionamiX (Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Ghent University, under Jan M. Baetens) and the Scientific Computing Group (São Carlos Institute of Physics, University of São Paulo, under Odemir M. Bruno). More on the research page and on ORCID.

The picture is not explained yet: within ten minutes the room will know what it is, and it comes back on the last slide.
